What types of organizations qualify?

EIA offers service grants to tax-exempt entities such 501(c)(3) public charities, schools, private foundations, government entities, etc.

These partner agencies all meet the following criteria:

  • Agency has submitted a formal application through the EIA Portal
  • EIA staff have reviewed the application and vetted the agency, usually involving a site visit or phone conference; the goal of this process is to determine whether the agency is capable of meeting the criteria below.
  • Agency has staff in place; EIA is not equipped to support all-volunteer organizations or start-ups except in rare circumstances;
  • Agency agrees to provide an effective on-boarding process for any executives placed at their agency, as well as the ongoing support needed to meet the goals of assigned projects.

In addition, while it is not required, preference is given to organizations that are members of the Center for Nonprofit Management and that have a completed profile on www.DonorBridgeTX.org. These are strong signs that the organization is committed to being a learning organization, and that it would benefit from the expertise of EIA's outside consultants.

What is required from nonprofit partners?

Our arrangement with nonprofits includes:

  1. Offering our services at no financial cost, but with a significant requirement of “sweat equity” from one of the nonprofit’s own staff members. This person serves as the project sponsor, and agrees to invest at least 10 hours of one-on-one time with the EIA consultant.
  2. All projects must be something that the organization could not otherwise afford or require talent that they could not otherwise access. Projects should not displace responsibilities from current staff members. This ensures buy-in on both sides while not creating friction with the organization’s own staff.
  3. All projects must be focused on a specific set of measurable goals that can be achieved by a consultant working 1-2 days per week over a 90-day window.

Sample Projects

  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who revised a nonprofit’s financial reporting structure—generating more accurate cash flow projections and margin analyses
  • Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who helped a nonprofit launch a for-profit social enterprise to increase earned income
  • Chief Technology Officer (CTO) who developed a five-year technology plan to enable the organization grow in a sustainable fashion
  • Sr. VP of Marketing who conducted a brand audit and donor analysis to strengthen an organization’s overall marketing program
